Moosonee

Moosonee is one of the most unique towns in Ontario because it sits on the edge of James Bay, where “road-accessible Ontario” ends and the true Far North begins.

Location: Moosonee, ON

Season: Open for all seasons

Moosonee often called the gateway to the Arctic-like Hudson Bay coast, including places like Tidewater Provincial Park and Moose Factory. It’s small, remote, and very tied to the natural environment.

What Moosonee is Like
Moosonee feels different from most Ontario towns:
- no road connection to southern Ontario
- accessible mainly by train or plane
- surrounded by rivers, muskeg, and boreal wilderness
- strong Cree culture and heritage
- close to tidal waters of James Bay

How to Get There
=>🚆 Train (most iconic)
The famous: Polar Bear Express
runs from Cochrane to Moosonee long scenic journey through boreal forest and muskeg, often considered one of Canada’s great northern train trips
=>✈️ Air
small regional flights from Timmins or other northern hubs, faster but less scenic
